Another week has passed with lots to mention. Our Nursery and Reception children enjoyed a visit from ‘The Owl Man’ as part of our third and final Sparkle Day of the term. The children (and staff!) were fascinated to see the owls flying across the hall and hear lots of interesting information about them. The children even had the chance to hold them! Thank you to all our staff for the planning and organisation of these Sparkle Days. They really have ignited the children’s interest in their new topics.

We had not one but two PFA meetings this week. Another well attended morning meeting brought about lots of discussion and ideas followed by the AGM on Wednesday. It has been fantastic to see the level of support we have as a school from our parents and I’d like to thank you all on behalf of all of our staff for this. A number of events are already in the planning stages – the PFA will be keeping you updated over coming weeks. If you were unable to attend either of the meetings but have an idea to share or would like to get involved, please email pfa@birches.staffs.sch.uk .

The children enjoyed a visit from Caroline Seaton, the Children’s Worker from St Nicholas Church last week. Caroline delivered an assembly to get them thinking about the gift of the new school year and the opportunities it brings.

I’d like to take the opportunity to say ‘thank you’ and ‘well done’ to the children and parents who have supported us so well with our new morning lining up system. It really has made such a difference and we can now see the children clearly and supervise the lines as they line up and walk in.

Our Meet the Staff evening was well attended last week with many parents taking the opportunity to pop in and have a chat with staff and a look around new classrooms. We hope you enjoyed the opportunity. Appointments will be available with teachers at Parent’s Evening after half term, providing an opportunity to discuss learning, progress and targets.

Well done to the Birches football team who played brilliantly on Thursday at Codsall High School against Lane Green. The game finished in a draw 2-2 but the children should be very proud of their first result. Thank you to staff and parents who came to support.

The week finished with Year 2 visiting the fire station as part of their topic on The Great Fire of London. I was delighted to hear from Mrs Cain how well the children had behaved and how they had asked such super questions. Thank you to staff who supported on this trip and, of course, the staff at the fire station for allowing us to visit. Year 1 will be looking forward to their visit in a few weeks.

And finally, a huge thank you to everyone who donated cakes and/or attended our coffee morning and afternoon cake sale on Friday in aid of MacMillan. We raised £111 to support this fantastic charity. Thank you to members of the PFA who gave their time to help set up and serve.

Please look out for a letter coming home this week with details of Grandparents Day which will be taking place on Monday 8th October.

Best wishes, Mrs Ferretti.
