Reception Admissions

In order for your child to be admitted to school, parents should complete a school application form and provide proof of their child’s date of birth. A formal application for entry to primary school from Staffordshire County Council is then sent out in the autumn term of the school year before your child is five years old. Your child is then admitted in September preceding his/her fifth birthday. Parents may apply for places at anytime after this date if vacancies exist.

It is intended that the Published Admission Number (PAN) of pupils to be admitted to this school at the normal age of entry will not exceed 30. Admissions are administered by Staffordshire County Council. If the number of applications for admission, including second and third preferences, exceeds the school’s PAN, places will be allocated in accordance with the oversubscription criteria and the following order of priority will apply:

1. Relevant Looked After Children
2. Pupils who satisfy both of the following tests: Test 1 – medical grounds Test 2 – they would suffer hardship if unable to attend
3. Pupils who have an elder sibling in attendance at the school and who will still be attending the school at the proposed admission date
4. Pupils living within the catchment area of the school

Further information regarding admissions can be found on Staffordshire County Council’s Website.  Here you can find out about our school’s admission arrangements through the local authority.

What does Birches First School Nursery offer?

15 Hours Free Childcare Provision                                                                                                                                                    Most children join the Nursery class in the September following their third birthday. However, should places be available, children may be able to join our Nursery class at the beginning of the term following their 3rd birthday. (January or April) or shortly after their third birthday.

Children starting shortly after their 3rd birthday and before their 15 hours entitlement begins will be charged a daily rate of £12.00 for a morning or afternoon session or £28.50 for a full day 8.35am-3.15pm, including lunch. (Optional additional wraparound sessions are also available…please see below).

Funded places are available from the term after a child’s 3rd birthday for 15 hours (a morning session 8.35-11.35am or afternoon session 12.15-3.15pm each day).

We also offer the option of additional, charged extended nursery places if available. For example…a child with a morning place could extend their session in the following ways…

Breakfast Club 7.30-8.35am. £4.00                                                                                                                                                        Lunch 11.35am-12.15pm £4.50                                                                                                                                                          Afternoon session – 12.15-3.15pm (subject to availability) £16.50 (includes lunch)                                                                                      After school care at Birches Club 3.15-5.45pm. £3.90 per hour

An afternoon nursery session can be extended by adding on lunch (11.35am-12.15pm) or after school care at Birches Club 3.15-5.45pm. (Additional charges apply as above).

30 Hours

We accommodate 30 Hours Funded places for parents/carers who present an Eligibility Code from HMRC, where there is availability. The 30 Hours Funded places can only be used for Nursery Provision (8.35am-3.15pm daily). There is a daily charge of £4.50 for lunch/lunchtime care.

In addition, parents of children eligible for 30 Hours childcare may make use of Birches Club (breakfast and after school provision) subject to additional charges (as above).

Rising 3s

We may be able to accept children into our Nursery during the term in which they turn 3.  For example, a child who turns 3 in September will usually be entitled to 15 Hours Free Childcare from the January following their birthday. However, at Birches, subject to availability, we may be able to offer this child a place to start as soon as they turn 3 (‘Rising 3s’). Places are chargeable until the start of their Free 15/30 Hours entitlement. (January in this instance). Priority will be given to 3 and 4 year old children who are eligible for Free 15/30 Hours Childcare funding.

Please note…Children joining the Nursery class as Rising 3s (just after their third birthday) or in the January or April following their 3rd birthday will NOT automatically keep the Nursery Class place in the following September. They will need to reapply for a place for the September which will be subject to the Nursery admissions criteria. Likewise, admission to the Nursery class does NOT guarantee a place in the Reception class. Again, a separate application must be made which will be subject to the admissions criteria.

Please contact our school office and we will be able to answer any questions and guide you through the admissions process

Please note a change for September 2018 intake – all applications for places must be received by the school office within the timescales listed above to enable you to access a place for your child. To see the admissions criteria for this please see the attachments below or call in and ask for a paper copy in the school office.
